***MARYLAND ANIMAL HEALTH UPDATE (2/1/2026)***
Maryland Lifts Intrastate Equine CVI Requirements due to EHV-1 Outbreak
The Maryland State Veterinarian’s Office has lifted the requirement for intrastate equine Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs), effective February 1, 2026.
Equine Travel Requirements
- Maryland equids traveling within the state must have a valid Coggins test to participate in equine events.
- While not required, it is recommended that horses traveling intrastate do so with a valid CVI or EECVI.
- The use of EECVIs has been reinstated.
- The EHV statement is no longer required on CVIs.
- Interstate Certificates of Veterinary Inspection are required for equids originating outside of Maryland.
St. Augustine Pony Club requires a current (within 12 months) proof of negative Coggins and proof of vaccination for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1 or “Rhino”) is also required. Records must reflect vaccine administration no more than six months (November 24, 2025) and no fewer than 14 days (May 10, 2026) prior to arrival at Buckworth. This means that every horse at Buckworth must have been vaccinated for EHV-1 between November 24, 2025 and May 10, 2026.
The following are the only forms of accepted vaccination documentation:
• Bill/receipt with vet practice name, contact info, date, and horse’s name, indicating EHV-1 administration
• A letter on practice letterhead, signed and dated, certifying administration
• Name and vaccine type noted by veterinarian on signed health certificate/import documents
All must be prepared to show these documents upon arrival at Buckworth, at check-in, and at any point throughout the event. Horses with insufficient health paperwork will be immediately asked to leave the grounds.
